Fairy Tale and Folktale Fridays #24: The Gingerbread Man

Hey there!  Welcome to "Fairy Tale and Folktale Fridays," a new feature on my blog where I discuss about some fairy tales and folktales I have read throughout the years.

The Gingerbread Man

Type: Fairy Tale

Country of Origin: USA

Main Character Hero or Heroine: Hero

Recommend?: Yes!

Once upon a time, there lived an old woman and an old man who wanted to make a gingerbread man to eat and the old woman immediately started making the gingerbread man.  But as soon as the old woman took the gingerbread man out of the oven, the gingerbread man was brought to life and it immediately jumped out of the oven and ran out of the old couple's house.  The old couple then stared chasing the Gingerbread Man and along the way, the Gingerbread encounters a horse, a cow and other animals and they all started chasing the Gingerbread Man.  Eventually, the Gingerbread Man encounters a fox and the fox tells the Gingerbread Man that he will help him cross the river.  The Gingerbread Man agrees to this, however is the fox as trusting as he seems?

I always thought that this book was pretty adorable.  I loved the little phrase of the Gingerbread Man saying:

"RUN, RUN
AS FAST AS YOU CAN!
YOU CAN'T CATCH ME,
I'M THE GINGERBREAD MAN!"

Even though now that I look back on it, the story was kind of weird because how in the world did the Gingerbread Man came to life in the first place?  But then again, since this is a fairy tale, not everything has to necessarily make sense in order to enjoy the story and I still enjoyed this story despite wondering about how the Gingerbread Man came to life in the first place!

1. Do you enjoy eating Gingerbread Man cookies?

I used to eat Gingerbread Cookies all the time when I was little. Nowadays, I don't really eat them that much anymore.

2. Did you wondered about how the Gingerbread Man came to life in the first place?

When I first read this story, I didn't really think too much on it. But after awhile, I did started thinking about how it was possible for the gingerbread man to come to life. Although, it didn't really affect my enjoyment of this story.

3. What would you have done if a food item you just cooked just suddenly came to life?

I definitely wouldn't mess with the food item after that!

  1. I also love the refrain of this story. I think it's perfect for little kids, because it's easy to remember, and it's fun to say. This is great, thanks for sharing!
