Hello everyone! "Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, that is hosted by Breaking the Spine and the purpose of this event is that we spotlight upcoming releases of books that we are excited for! This will also tie into Wishful Ending's Can't Wait Wednesday post!
This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:
Title: American Panda
Author: Gloria Chao
Expected Publication Date: February 6th, 2018
An incisive, laugh-out-loud contemporary debut about a Taiwanese-American teen whose parents want her to be a doctor and marry a Taiwanese Ivy Leaguer despite her squeamishness with germs and crush on a Japanese classmate.
At seventeen, Mei should be in high school, but skipping fourth grade was part of her parents' master plan. Now a freshman at MIT, she is on track to fulfill the rest of this predetermined future: become a doctor, marry a preapproved Taiwanese Ivy Leaguer, produce a litter of babies.
With everything her parents have sacrificed to make her cushy life a reality, Mei can't bring herself to tell them the truth--that she (1) hates germs, (2) falls asleep in biology lectures, and (3) has a crush on her classmate Darren Takahashi, who is decidedly not Taiwanese.
But when Mei reconnects with her brother, Xing, who is estranged from the family for dating the wrong woman, Mei starts to wonder if all the secrets are truly worth it. Can she find a way to be herself, whoever that is, before her web of lies unravels?

The fact that this story is based in another culture and also discusses about identity issues has really gotten me interested!
Sounds good and I'm right there with you, it piqued my attention for the very same reasons!

DeleteRonyell, what a GREAT pick!! I got this on NG and read it in December, and absolutely adored it. It's pretty character driven, and the mother-daughter relationship and the representation were done so well! I hope you love this one. :)

I read this last week, and really enjoyed it. There are a lot of fun parts, but some heavy/sad parts too, and there is a lot of Chinese culture woven into the story. I hope you like it when you read it.

I am not a contemporary YA fan by any means but I have to say I'm loving that there is actually another culture represented in this. Maybe 2018 will be the year of diversity in publishing. I'm going to have to read this one when it comes out!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! I hope we get some good diverse reads this year!
DeleteThis one does look good! One I'll probably get for my high school library. Thanks for stopping by Wednesday Post on Lisa Loves Literature earlier!
