Wow…just wow…I am totally at a loss of words for this book…So, when I received a copy of the book “The Comic” by G. Hingorani, I was not expecting this book to suddenly have a massive shift in tone halfway through.

The book is about a famous comedian named Calvin “The Comic” Everswood and even though he puts on a funny façade whenever he is doing his stand-up gigs, he is secretly suffering in his life as he suffers from drug addiction and ended up pushing away all of his former friends.  Now, not only is Calvin dealing with his stand-up comedy shows, but he also tries to recover from his drug addiction, while trying to rekindle his relationship with his old friends.

Wow…just wow again…. When I started reading this book, I thought that this was going to be a humorous book about the life of a comedian.  Even though this book does have some humorous moments with Calvin’s stand-up act, the story suddenly becomes a tragedy once we are introduced to Calvin’s drug addiction and how it is ruining Calvin’s life.  G. Hingorani’s writing in this book is spectacular as it details the downward spiral of Calvin’s life, as he gets addicted to drugs and he ends up losing his friends because of it.  It really made this story extremely intense and sad to read through and I was always hoping for Calvin to try to turn his life around and become a better person.  I also like the fact that this book did a great job at detailing the dangers of drug addiction and how it can ruin your life.  I also loved the fact that G. Hingorani set up the book as a stage play as it made the book easier to read and it really made the story stand out to me.

This book does contain some strong and suggestive language that might be a bit uncomfortable for some people.

Overall, I really loved reading “The Comic!”  It is such a dark and sad book about the dangers of drug addiction that many people should definitely check out!

I would like to thank the author Candace N. Ford and PR by the Book for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Oh man! How long has it been since I last read a romance novel?  Since the middle of 2018?  A long time then!  Anyway, when PR by the Book sent me a copy of Candace N. Ford’s latest book “The Agitated Agenda,” I was a bit surprised by this since it is rare that I would receive a copy of a romance novel just as they are being released!  So, I just read this book and I have to say that it was one of the most shocking yet heartwarming stories I have ever read!

Priscilla Richardson was a young African-American woman who was trying to the graduate at the top of her class at Georgetown Law School.  Even though Priscilla had suffered a tragic loss when her mother died in a car accident, Priscilla still tried to move on and make it her goal in life to work in one of the most prestigious law firms and become a partner within five years. When Priscilla finally got into a law firm, she meets up with a young Caucasian man named Tom Ward and the two automatically fell in love with each other.  After staying a year at the law firm and with Tom, Priscilla started feeling sick and her illness got so bad that her best friend Sylvia had to take her to the hospital.  It was then that Priscilla discovers that she is pregnant and she starts panicking due to the fact that she never planned on being a mother and that the pregnancy came out of nowhere.  Now Priscilla has to discover for herself that not everything in her life will go according to plan and that she has to make the best of her situation and restore her faith in God to help her get through this unexpected turn of events.

Wow!  I am beyond amazed with this book!  Candace N. Ford has done a great job at writing this book as all the characters and the events were so relatable to me!  It is rare that I read a romance novel that actually takes a more realistic look at how romance works in the real world and how sometimes life throws curveballs at us that we were not prepared for.  I also loved the way that Candace N. Ford threw in so many twists and turns to the plot as I was not expecting Priscilla to go through so many horrible situations, which included the death of her mother early on in the book.  I really loved Priscilla herself as she is probably one of the most relatable protagonists, I have ever read in a romance novel!  I actually felt bad for Priscilla throughout the story as she had made big plans for herself and was prepared to follow through them.  But there were many unexpected situations that happened to her that prevented her from following her dreams.  I actually related to Priscilla through her ordeals as I myself had also made some plans for myself once I left college, like getting a high paying job from the get go.  But, when the recession hit, my plans ended up being put on the backburner when I could not find a high paying job due to the job market taking a hit during the recession.  But like Priscilla had to do in this story, I had to make the best of the situation and just hope that my life got better from that point forward and have faith in myself during that time.  I especially loved the fact there is an interracial relationship in this book (between Priscilla, a black woman and Tom, a white man) as it is rare that I see interracial romances in romance novels.  Priscilla and Tom’s relationship with each other was the highlight of this book as their relationship felt so genuine and I loved the fact that Priscilla and Tom are always there for each other, especially when Tom was trying to help Priscilla deal with her unexpected pregnancy.

The reason why I took off a few points from the rating was because I felt that the narrative jumped around a bit too much at some points, as there were too many events happening, that it got a bit hard to follow the story at times.   I also felt that the climax was a bit too abrupt since I was getting used to the turn of events that had just happened and then the climax suddenly introduced a new problem for Priscilla that came out of nowhere.

Overall, “The Agitated Agenda” is a truly shocking yet heartwarming story about the importance of true love and keeping your faith, that I think romance fans will enjoy!  Now, let us hope that a sequel gets made soon because that cliffhanger is brutal!

[BOOK REVIEW] The Master Player by Emma Darcy

Title:  The Master Player

Author: Emma Darcy

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Number of Pages: 186 pages

Date Read: 2/24/2011

Publisher: Harlequin Books

Source:  Library

Content Rating:  Ages 16+ (Sexual Dialogue)

Book Reporter: Hello everyone! This is the Book Reporter and today I am going to interview Miss Ronyell about her thoughts on Emma Darcy’s one hundredth book, “The Master Player!” Hello Miss Ronyell!

Ronyell: Hello Book Reporter! Nice to meet you!

Book Reporter: So I see that you have just recently read Emma Darcy’s book, “The Master Player.” Could you give us a brief summary on this book?

Ronyell: Certainly! Basically, “The Master Player” is about a young star actress named Chloe Rollins who is married to a popular screenwriter named Tony Lipton and has her mother, Stephanie Rollins, as her agent. Life was going well for Chloe until a horrible scandal between Tony and her personal assistant, Laura Farrell, threaten to destroy Chloe’s career, until a handsome billionaire named Maximilian Hart saves Chloe from getting her reputation ruined when he takes her to live with him at his mansion. Of course, Chloe has heard rumors that Max is a player and she notices that Max not only wants to rescue her, but steal her heart in the process too!

Book Reporter: Wow! This book does sound interesting! So what did you think about Emma Darcy’s writing style?

Ronyell: I loved the way that Emma Darcy made this book extremely dramatic and heartwarming at the same time. The scenes where Chloe confronts her mother, Tony and Laura were extremely well done as these scenes were seriously intense and greatly confirmed Chloe’s fear of them. I was actually on the edge of my seat when I was reading these scenes between Chloe and her family. I also loved the sexual scenes between Max and Chloe, even though there were rarely any in this book and one of the sex scenes in this book were a little bit too explicit, but nicely done. I will admit that whenever Emma Darcy spelled certain words like “realize” to “realise,” I was a little confused, but because the story was so interesting, I did not mind about the spellings in this book.

Book Reporter: Who were your favorite characters and what do you like about them?

Ronyell: My favorite characters in this book were Chloe and Max and what I liked about Chloe’s character was that at first she did not know how to defend herself since she was told what to do almost her entire life; however, as the book evolves Chloe becomes a stronger and more independent character that I really enjoyed reading through. The character who truly stood out the most for me was Maximilian Hart (or Max for short) because he was truly an awesome character. Not only was he described as being an extremely muscular man, which is an aspect that I loved about most romance heroes, but he was an extremely considerate and independent character who truly cares for Chloe’s feelings and tries everything in his power to protect her. My favorite scene with Max was when he literally threw Tony out of his mansion when he was threatening Chloe and that just showed so much man power for me!

Book Reporter: So you love muscular men in romance novels, do you?

Ronyell: I most certainly do!

Book Reporter: What rating did you give this book?

Ronyell: I gave this book a four and a half rating because it seems like Chloe did not trust Max enough to commit to a serious relationship with him. Even I though I liked the idea of Chloe being independent, I think that she rarely trusted Max and she was pretty oblivious to Max’s affections for her. Also, Max practically helped Chloe with being independent and he also protected and cared for Chloe. I know that Chloe has trust issues with Max because of her rough life with her mother and Tony, but she should have confided her problems to Max and also when her mother made accusations against Max not being able to love her back, Chloe rarely stood up for Max and she sort of let what her mother and Tony said affect her feelings for Max, which is probably why there were not many romantic scenes between Max and Chloe until a hundred pages later.

Book Reporter: I understand that this is the first book that you have read from the Harlequin Presents series. Any final thoughts on this book are you planning on reading more books from the Harlequin Presents series?

Ronyell: Overall, I thought that “The Master Player” was a great romance novel and I am sure that many romance fans will definitely enjoy this book! Yes, now that I have read this book, I am definitely looking forward to reading more books from the Harlequin Presents series!

Book Reporter: Thank you for your time Ronyell! Well, there you have it everyone! Be sure to check this book out at your local library or your local bookstore!

I would like to thank Book Unleashed and Hot Sauce Publishing for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

After I had read “The Frog Prince” from Book Unleashed, I just had to request another book to review and lo and behold, I found an interesting romance book called “It Takes a Cat Burglar” by Cailin Briste and I was quite interested in this story!

The story starts off with a young woman named Darcelle Lebeau who is training to become a great cat burglar and she is training under a mysterious man who goes by the name Matou.  What Darcelle does not know is that the mysterious Matou is actually Sebastian St. Croix, a rich man who is also a cat burglar.  After Sebastian observes Darcelle’s skills for a while now, he had decided to make Darcelle his partner in crime. But first, Darcelle must complete a mission that involves trying to save Sebastian’s niece Cheyenne from the clutches of a corrupted businessman.  During Darcelle’s training though, Sebastian and Darcelle start falling in love with each other and they will have to keep their hands off of each other in order for the mission to go as smoothly as planned.

Wow! I was quite impressed with this story that was written by Cailin Briste since this would be the first romance novel I had read that dealt with cat burglars falling in love!  I loved the fact that this story is centered on cat burglars because it makes this book so unique to read, since in most romance books, the characters I had read were either dukes, duchesses, businessmen and normal people.  I also enjoyed the way that Cailin Briste wrote both Darcelle and Sebastian as they were pretty interesting characters, because of the fact that they are both cat burglars, and yet, you get to see them slowly bonding with each other, despite the fact that they both want to control the other.  I like the fact that both Darcelle and Sebastian are shown as being strong protagonists as with the case of Darcelle, she refuses to let anyone run her life and she wants to be more independent, especially after the life she had to go through with her overbearing mother and her sister Cassie.  I also liked Sebastian because even though he struts his authority throughout the book, it is clear that he has Darcelle’s best interests at heart and is willing to allow her to do whatever she desires.  I really loved the way that Cailin Briste wrote the sexual scenes between Sebastian and Darcelle as they were hot and sexy and I was literally fanning myself whenever the sexual scenes would show up!

The reason why I gave this book a four-star rating was because I felt that because of the book’s short length, there was not enough character development going on with the characters.  I wanted to learn more about Sebastian’s backstory and how he became a cat burglar since he seems a bit too mysterious for a character and I wanted to learn more about his character. I also felt that Darcelle and Sebastian’s relationship with each other fell into the “insta-love” category and there was not enough build up to their romance with each other that made me actually buy into how well developed their romance was.

Overall, “It Takes a Cat Burglar” is a cute story about thieves falling love that many fans of romance novels will enjoy!

[BOOK REVIEW] Made You Up by Francesca Zappia

“Sometimes I think people take reality for granted.”

For many years now, I have been hearing many good things about Francesca Zappia’s book “Made You Up” and for a long time, I had wanted to check this book out and see what all the excitement was about.  So, when I finally got around to reading “Made You Up” by Francesca Zappia, I was seriously on cloud nine after finishing this book, because this was seriously one of the most unique and awesome books I had ever read!

Alex Ridgemont is just your average girl trying to make it into college and get through the tough trials of high school, except for one thing:  she has schizophrenia and is prone to seeing things that do not really exist and usually becomes extremely panicked whenever these delusions pop up.  However, despite Alex having schizophrenia, she does not let that get in her way of trying to live a normal life such as maintaining a job and going out with her friends.  One day however, Alex meets up with a mysterious and intimidating boy named Miles Richter and she believes that he may be the boy she met when she was younger.  However, Alex thought that the mysterious boy she met when she was younger was a part of her hallucinations and she tries to figure out if Miles is real or not.

Wow…just wow… This novel was simply amazing!  I just cannot get over the romantic, mysterious and intensifying tone of this novel!  Francesca Zappia’s writing is both witty and intense at the same time as I got immersed into the mystery plot of the story that involves Principal McCoy’s secret dealings within the school and also trying to figure out what events is Alex hallucinating and what events are actually real.  I also loved the way that Francesca Zappia explored schizophrenia through Alex’s character as we get to see firsthand how schizophrenia works and how it affects the people who have it and we get to see Alex struggle with her condition as she is trying to distinguish between reality and fantasy and how she feels so conflicted because of this.  I was also shocked by the huge twist that happens in the plot towards the end of the story as I was thrown off by this revelation and it took me quite by surprise!  But probably the best part of this story were the characters themselves!  I really enjoyed the witty bantering going on between Alex and Miles as they constantly bicker with each other, but they really understand each other’s situations and they try to be there for each other, no matter how difficult the situation gets.  I also liked the fact that both Miles and Alex have so much interest in world history that the scenes where they are reciting certain parts from history, especially World War II with such ease, are truly adorable to read through!   I really enjoyed Alex herself as a character because she represents the conditions of having schizophrenia and I like the fact that despite her occasional temper tantrums, Alex always tries to look on the bright side of things and tries to live a normal life, despite her condition, which is extremely uplifting!  Now, Miles is probably my most favorite character in this book since he also has a condition where he cannot distinguish emotions from other people and tends to act rude towards other people, because he does not understand about how he affects other people.  I just loved the fact that despite arguing with Alex through most of the book, Miles really does care about Alex and he is always trying to be there for Alex during her rough moments and seems to really understand Alex’s condition.

For anyone who does not like strong language, this novel has a surprising amount of strong language for a young adult novel, including words like the “s” word and the “f” word.

Overall, “Made You Up” is seriously one of the best books about mental illness that I had ever read and I cannot wait to read more of Francesca Zappia’s other works!
