Banned Books



Hello everyone!  Since I love reading Banned Books in general and finding out the reasons why a particular book got banned in the first place, I've created a page where I keep a list of all the banned books I had read so far and I will also state the reasons why that book got banned in the first place.  You can click on the links of each book to check out my reviews on these books!







1.  Olive's Ocean by Kevin Henkes : REASON FOR BEING BANNED : For having sexually explicit content and offensive language (4 stars)

3.  In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendak: REASON FOR BEING BANNED: For showing an image of Mickey being naked. (5 stars)
4.  Halloween ABC by Eve Merriam: REASON FOR BEING BANNED: For containing frightening subject matter and being unsuitable to the age group. (5 stars)
5.  The Lorax by Dr. Seuss : REASON FOR BEING BANNED : For portraying the foresting industry in a negative way and some people felt it persuaded children to be against logging. (5 stars)
6.  Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz : REASON FOR BEING BANNED : Unsuited for age group, violence. (5 stars)
7.  More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz : REASON FOR BEING BANNED : Unsuited for age group, violence  (4.5 stars)
8.  Saga Volume 1 by Brian K. Vaughan : REASON FOR BEING BANNED : For having "anti-family" themes, nudity and sexually explicit scenes. (6 stars)
9.  A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein : REASON FOR BEING BANNED : The poem "How Not to Have To Dry the Dishes" was criticized for encouraging kids to be messy and disobedient, while the poem "Little Abigail and the Beautiful Pony" was criticized for describing the death of a girl after her parents refused to buy her a pony.  Also for discussing supernatural themes such as demons, devils and ghosts. (5 stars)
10.  The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins : REASON FOR BEING BANNED : For having anti-ethnic, anti-family, insensitivity, offensive language, occult / satanic, violence, religious viewpoint, unsuited to age group  (5 stars)
11. Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones by Alvin Schwartz : REASON FOR BEING BANNED : Unsuited for age group, violence  (4.5 stars)
12. And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell : REASON FOR BEING BANNED: For being anti-family, homosexuality, political viewpoint, religious viewpoint, unsuited for age group. (Additional reasons): "promotes the homosexual agenda."  (4 stars)
13. Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein: REASON FOR BEING BANNED:  For promoting drug use, the occult, suicide, death, violence, disrespect for truth and authority and rebellion against parents.  Also, for the poem "Dreaded" over the line "someone ate the baby" as they feared it might encourage cannibalism.  (5 stars)
14. Sylvester and the Magic Pebble by William Steig: REASON FOR BEING BANNED: For having illustrations that portrayed police characters as pigs.  (5 stars)
15. The Chocolate War by Robert CormierREASON FOR BEING BANNED: For heavy use of profanity, sexual references and references to bribery, distortion and physical violence.  (4 stars)
16. The Adventures of Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey: REASON FOR BEING BANNED: For having offensive language and being unsuited to the age group.  (5 stars)
17. Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr.: REASON FOR BEING BANNED:  Was banned by the State Board of Education in Texas due to a board member accidentally mixing up the book's author Bill Martin Jr. with another author named Bill Martin who wrote "Ethical Marxism: The Categorical Imperative of Liberation."  (5 stars)
18. Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss: REASON FOR BEING BANNED:  Was banned by the People's Republic of China in 1965 for having a Marxist allegory.   (4 stars)
19. The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats: REASON FOR BEING BANNED:  On the grounds that a white author (Ezra Jack Keats) has no right to create a black character.  (5 stars)
20. Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak: REASON FOR BEING BANNED:  For being "too dark" and for supernatural themes.  (5 stars)
