“It is very hard to be human, little fox. Even the humans themselves don’t do a great job of it.”

I had never read any of Julie Kagawa’s books before, even though I had heard about her famous “Iron Fey” series.  So, when Owlcrate sent me a copy of her newest book “Shadow of the Fox,” I just knew that I had to check this book out and man, was this one of the best books that I had ever read this year!

Many years ago, a Kami Dragon was summoned to grant one wish and the land of Iwagoto was changed for the worst.  Since then, many people tried to find the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers in order to have their wishes granted.  In the isolated Silent Winds temple, there lived a half kitsune, half human girl named Yumeko, who has been living with the monks at that temple for all her life.  Even though Yumeko would use her powers to play tricks on the monks, the monks would constantly warn her to not use her powers too often or terrible things will happen to her.
Life was peaceful for Yumeko, until one tragic day, her temple was attacked by an oni and his group of demons and all of the monks at the temple had died from the attack.  It turns out that the oni was searching for a piece of the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers and one of the monks had entrusted Yumeko with a piece of the scroll.  The monk then tells Yumeko to take the scroll to the Steel Feather Temple so that they could protect the scroll.  Things get complicated for Yumeko when she ends up meeting a mysterious and cold-hearted samurai named Kage Tatsumi, who is also looking for the missing scroll and will kill anyone who gets in his way.  So, in order to save her own life and make it to the Steel Feather Temple, Yumeko ends up lying to Tatsumi about her true identity and about the fact that she does not have the scroll, even though she actually does.  As Yumeko and Tatsumi pair up with each other, they will soon realize that an evil force is coming after them, as that force also wants to take the scroll from Yumeko.

Wow…just wow… I never would have thought that I would have fallen in love with this book the way that I did!  This was the first book that I had read by Julie Kagawa and it was definitely worth the read!  Julie Kagawa did a fantastic job at exploring the Japanese mythology in this book as she introduces creatures like the yokai and the oni, which are commonly found in Japanese folklore.  I also loved the fact that this book reads like an anime, since I love watching anime!  There are many action sequences in this book and this book reminded me a bit of the anime shows “Yona of the Dawn” (which features a group of people protecting the protagonist) and “Inuyasha” (with the use of demons in the story).  I also loved the way that Julie Kagawa wrote each character in this book, with my favorite characters being Yumeko, Tatsumi and the ronin Okame.  Yumeko was such a cute and endearing character as she is shown as being innocent throughout the story and yet, she is also brave and determined enough to complete her mission in getting the scroll into safe hands.  Tatsumi was a really interesting character as he acts cold towards most people, but when you realize that it is because he is trying to keep a demon inside him at bay, you really start to sympathize with him throughout the story.  Okame was one of my all-time favorite characters as he brings in so much humor to the story and I love his “I do not care about what other people think about me” attitude as it made me root for him throughout the story!  I also liked Tatsumi and Yumeko’s relationship with each other as Yumeko tries to bring out the best in Tatsumi.  But since we know that a demon is inside Tatsumi, I must admit that there were times where I got a bit worried about whether or not Tatsumi might hurt Yumeko because of the demon inside of him.

For anyone who does not like gory violence, there is a lot of gory violence in this book, especially with numerous scenes of people getting cut in half or getting ripped apart.  Also, the fact that the main characters are living in a world where their lives are constantly in danger might unsettle some people who are not used to violence or monsters.

Overall, “Shadow of the Fox” is a fantastic book to read if you love Japanese mythology and action-packed stories!  Man, I really want to pick up the second book “Soul of the Sword” soon, because that ending was murder and I really want to know what will happen to the characters next!

[BOOK REVIEW] This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

Title:  This Savage Song

Author:  Victoria Schwab

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Year Published: 2016

Number of Pages:  427 pages

Date Read: 6/27/2018

Series: Monsters of Verity #1

Publisher:  Greenwillow Books

Source:  Purchased

Content Rating:  Ages 16+ (Gory Violence and Strong Language)

Buy on:  Amazon  //  Book Depository

“Monsters, monsters, big and small,
"They're gonna come and eat you all.
Corsai, Corsai, tooth and claw,
Shadow and bone will eat you raw.
Malchai, Malchai, sharp and sly,
Smile and bite and drink you dry.
Sunai, Sunai, eyes like coal,
Sing you a song and steal your soul.
Monsters, monsters, big and small,
They're gonna come and eat you all!”

Now, I have been hearing so many good things about Victoria Schwab’s popular “Monsters of Verity” series and I just had to pick this series up as soon as possible!  So, the first book in the series is “This Savage Song” and it was so beautifully written by Victoria Schwab that I just immediately fell in love with this book!

The city of Verity is in the middle of a war between the monsters and the humans, as monsters such as the Corsai, Malchai and the Sunai, are plaguing the city with violence and death.  The humans, on the other hand, are trying to protect themselves against the monsters and are living every day in fear.  Overseeing the city of Verity is a man named Callum Harker, who is the most powerful man in the city and he promises to protect the humans against the monsters if they pay him for his help in taking down the monsters.  On the other side of the city, a man named Henry Flynn rules the part of the city that Harker has no control over and he also tries to protect the people of Verity from the monsters plaguing the city.  But, he is up against Harker and the two are at war with each other to see who will take over the city of Verity.  Kate Harker had just recently been kicked out of her most recent school for trying to set the building on fire and she returns to Verity to prove to her estranged father, Callum Harker, that she can be just as ruthless and merciless as him and has decided to attend Colton Academy to be closer to her father.
However, while at the academy, Kate encounters a shy and awkward boy named August Flynn, who is actually undercover by orders of Henry Flynn, to spy on Kate and see if they need to use her for leverage against Harker.  Also, August harbors a secret that Kate does not know about:  he is actually a Sunai, a monster that can suck out the souls of the people who have sinned and he uses his violin as a way to bring out the people’s souls so he can devour them.  In order to fit in the school, August must keep his true identity a secret from the other students, including Kate, who he slowly starts to develop a bond with.  In a city that is wrecked by war, August and Kate must find a way to survive in this war-torn town while trying to understand each other better.

Wow!  Double, DOUBLE wow!  I never would have thought that I would love this book so much when I read it for the first time!  Victoria Schwab’s writing was so beautiful and intense that I found myself being enthralled by the haunting yet amazing world that the story takes place in!  I loved the way that Victoria Schwab created the world of Verity as it is a truly frightening place, especially with the monsters constantly running amok the city and killing many innocent people without warning.  I liked the fact that this book can be really scary at times, especially during the scenes where August is having trouble controlling his powers and you cannot help but feel a sense of unease as you wonder if he will hurt Kate if his powers get out of control.  I liked the way that Victoria Schwab wrote all the characters in this book as each character is holding a dark secret that the reader does not know about until the very end of the book and Victoria Schwab does a great job at building up the mysteries surrounding each character.  Out of all the characters in this book that I enjoyed the most, they were, of course Kate and August themselves!   I liked the fact that Kate was an anti-hero in this story and that she was acting a bit ruthless throughout the story because it is rare to see the protagonist of the story be so ruthless, even when we found out that it is because she just wanted her father to notice her.  I also loved August as he is the opposite of Kate as he is actually polite and shy, in contrast to Kate’s more aggressive personality and the fact that he is struggling with controlling his monster side makes him into such an interesting character!  I especially loved the relationship between Kate and August as they are more like friends in this book than lovers as it is rare for me to read a book where the main protagonists are just friends and I enjoyed the bonding that Kate and August have once they get to know each other better.

For anyone who does not like strong language, there are a couple of words like the “f” word and the “s” word being thrown around in this book that might offend some readers.  Also, there is some gory violence in this book as characters are stabbed or cut up in a graphic manner that might be disturbing to some readers.

Overall, “This Savage Song” is a truly brilliant book about true friendship, music and horror that fans of these type of books will definitely enjoy!  Now, without a further ado, I am off to read the second book in the series “Our Dark Duet!”

[ARC REVIEW] Immortal Flame by Jillian David (@JillianDavid13 , @Crimson_Romance)

Series: Hell to Pay #1

I would like to thank Reading Alley and Crimson Romance for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I have a bit of a confession to make:  I actually had this pretty little ARC on my shelf since 2016 and I still had not read it…until now!  After I finished reading “Immortal Flame” by Jillian David, I was seriously whacking myself in the head for not reading this ARC much sooner!  “Immortal Flame” was a truly fantastic paranormal romance read that made me want to read more from this series!

Peter Blackstone is an unusual person because even though he served as a veteran in World War II, he still looks extremely young for being a vet from World War II.  That is because in 1945, when Peter’s wife Claire was dying of a deadly sickness, Peter traded his soul to the devil, Jerahmeel in order to save Claire’s life.  But, in trading his soul, Peter is now a hired killer for the devil and he must go out and kill every bad person in the world so that way Jerahmeel would be able to feed on the souls of the people killed in order to survive.  At the same time, a young doctor named Allison La Croix seems to possess the ability to be able to see people’s deaths when she touches a person, which causes her so much turmoil since she wanted to live a normal life for once.  One day however, Peter ends up getting into a car accident and when he is taken to the hospital to tend to his wounds, Allison stumbles upon him and when she touched Peter, she starts seeing images of death that overwhelms her to near insanity.  It was then that Peter discovered about Allison’s powers and he tries to help Allison control her powers so she will not see people’s deaths too often every time she touches someone.  Unfortunately, Jerahmeel starts seeing that Peter and Allison are developing a close relationship with each other and he decides to send out one of his minions to kill Allison so Peter will never back out of his contract.  Now, Peter and Allsion will have to avoid Jerahmeel’s minion in order to not only survive but to save their love for each other in the process!

Wow!  I was quite impressed with this book! Jillian David’s writing was quite entertaining and sexy as heck as I found myself reading through this book rather quickly due to waiting with anticipation at how Allison and Peter’s love will survive Jerahmeel’s attempts to separate them!  I loved the way that Jillian David created this creative world as I was intrigued by the fact that the devil is apart of this world and it brings a sense of danger to this world as the characters have to watch their backs whenever the devil gets HUNGRY. I also loved the way that Jillian David wrote both Allison and Peter as I find their relationship to be quite realistic and at times tragic due to the state of their situations.  I actually felt bad for both Allison and Peter as they both wanted to live normal lives, but their powers make things difficult for them and I was wishing throughout the whole story that they both get their happily ever after.  I really loved Peter’s character as he is shown to be quite courageous, caring, strong and SEXY and I loved the fact that he is willing to put his life on the line if it means protecting Allison at all costs.  I also loved Allison herself as despite her fearing her powers, she is shown to be just as caring as Peter as she also tries to protect her loved ones from her powers and from any evil force that might befall her.  And the sex scenes are full of PURE SIZZLE that I was fanning myself every time a sex scene comes up between Allison and Peter!

For anyone who does not like gory violence or sex scenes, there are some explicit sex scenes that readers can skim over if they do not like reading sex scenes.  Also, the gory violence in this novel are a bit graphic and even disturbing as I found myself cringing a bit at how gruesome the violence towards certain characters were.  Also, and this is a bit of a small nitpick, but I wished that Allison would have done more in this novel than just worry about her future and fearing her powers as I wanted to see her actually fight against the bad guys using her powers.  Oh well, maybe we will see some of that in the later novels!

Overall, “Immortal Flame” is TRULY one paranormal romance that every paranormal romance fan should definitely check out! And, after I found out that this was apart of a series, I was SQUEALING with delight when I found out that there was a second book in the series that features Dante, which I got to pick up as soon as possible!!!

[BOOK REVIEW] Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

Title:  Dead Until Dark

Authors:  Charlaine Harris

Genre:  Paranormal Romance

Year Published: 2001

Number of Pages: 312 pages

Date Read: 1/31/2011

Series: Sookie Stackhouse #1

Publisher: Ace Books

Content Rating:  Ages 18+ (Strong Language)

I have read many paranormal romance books where the main character falls for a handsome and awesome vampire that knows how to kick bad guys to the curb! Well, I have just recently stumbled upon Charlaine Harris’s works and let me tell you, this book is unlike any other paranormal romance book I have ever read and this book is called “Dead until Dark.”  Not only is “Dead until Dark” the first book in the “Sookie Stackhouse series”, but it is also the first book that I have read from author Charlaine Harris and it is full of action, drama and vampire loving that will have any paranormal romance fan wanting more from this series!

Sookie Stackhouse is a waitress in Bon Temps, Louisiana and even though she is extremely beautiful, she has one disability that keeps the men away from her… she can read other people’s minds!  One day, Sookie meets a handsome vampire named Bill Compton and she starts to fall in love with him.  Unfortunately, the moment that Bill comes to town, a string of murders start to happen around Bon Temps and Bill is the prime suspect! Can Sookie clear Bill’s name?
We will see!

Words just cannot describe how much I really enjoyed this book since I actually stayed up most of the night trying to finish reading this book because it was so interesting!  Charlaine Harris has definitely done an awesome job at writing this larger than life paranormal romance novel that takes place in the South!  There are just so many awesome things that I loved about this book, but I will have to narrow it down to a few things and what I loved the most about this book were the two main characters and the awesome action scenes.  My favorite characters in this book were Sookie Stackhouse and Bill Compton as they are truly a unique couple that cannot be reckoned with!  Sookie Stackhouse is such an interesting character as not only is the story told from her point of view, but she was also the first mind reader character that I have read about in any paranormal romance novel.  I loved the way that Charlaine Harris does not focus solely on Sookie’s beautiful looks, but also her caring and strong personality since she is the only character in the book who actually knows about what is really going on with the murders of the women in Bon Temps and I loved the way that Sookie refused to let the town’s prejudice against vampires get to her as she protects Bill with all her might.  I also loved the way that Sookie fights her tough opponents as she seems to remind me a bit of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” except that she does not slay vampires!  Another character I really loved was Bill Compton since he can be both scary and sensual at the same time, two personalities that I really loved about this character!  Sookie and Bill’s relationship is sweet, especially since both characters wanted to protect each other from any harm that befalls them and there are many “sensual” moments between the two that will have you panting with anticipation!

The only issue I had with this book is that they rarely focused on the secondary and minor characters. What I mean by secondary characters in this book are the members who are close to Sookie which were Jason and her grandmother and I felt like these two characters were just too one-dimensional since we do not know much about their background other than the fact that they are related to Sookie and they seemed to have less spotlight time in this book than Sookie and Bill. Also, I felt like they could have focused a bit more on Sookie’s African American friends and Bill’s vampire friends since they have even less spotlight time in the book and it felt like they were really not in the book at all since this book was mainly about Sookie and Bill.  Also, this book contains much stronger language than any other paranormal romance novel I have read, so anyone who does not approve of strong language might want to skim over them.

Overall, “Dead until Dark” is seriously one of the best paranormal romance series that everyone who are fans of handsome vampires and strong females will just read over and over again!

Will I read the rest of the “Sookie Stackhouse” series? You bet I am! Sookie Stackhouse series, here I come!

Dark Hero by Hannah Howell – 4 stars

Berawald MacNachton is apart of the mysterious and powerful MacNachton clan and seems to possess mysterious powers. But, when a beautiful woman named Evanna Massey comes to his cave along with her younger brother David, Berawald starts to realize that Evanna is no normal Outsider and he starts developing feelings for her!

I really enjoyed this story as the characters were great and the romance between Evanna and Berawald was hot and sizzling, just the way I like it! Hannah Howell has done a great job at creating truly memorable characters and an intense plot that had me sitting on the edge of my seat! My favorite characters in this story were Berawald MacNachton and Evanna Massey as they are both kindhearted characters as they are willing to help anyone in danger and I also loved the romance between them as they accepted each others' pains and differences and tried to help each other through every dangerous situation. I truly loved Berawald as he was described as being muscular and handsome (I love that) and I also loved how brave and strong he is as I loved the scene where he fights a group of men who tortured David and I also loved the way that he is willing to protect Evanna and her brother David at all costs from the people who tried to kill her.

The reason why I took off a point for this story is because of the story's pace as it was a bit too slow for me and I often found myself trying to rush through this story to get to the exciting scenes. Overall, “Dark Hero” is truly a great short story worth checking out!

Bride of the Beast by Adrienne Basso – 4 stars

When Bethan's stepfather, Agnarr de Bellemare wanted to have a group of innocent men killed, Bethan took it upon herself to save these men by freeing them in the middle of the night and she meets a young boy named Haydn who wants to repay her. Ten years later, Bethan is a woman and Haydn is now known as Haydn of Gwyneed and Bethan has proposed to Haydn to marry her so that they can stop her stepfather's evil tyranny, but it seems that a love is starting to blossom between them!

Out of all the stories I have read in this book, this story was my favorite! Adrienne Basso has done an excellent job at creating an exciting plot throughout the book and I was seriously on the edge of my seat as I was trying to figure out whether or not Bethan and Haydn will succeed at dethroning de Bellemare! The character I really loved the most in this book was Haydn as he truly has a muscular body (which I like!) and he truly loved Bethan's courageous spirit in defeating her stepfather which made him into such an honorable character. I also loved the sexual scenes between Haydn and Bethan (I mean, what romance novel would not have sex scenes?) as they were truly hot and spicy!

The reason why this story did not get a five star rating is because of the heroine, Bethan. She was alright, when we first meet her because she was so courageous when she took matters in her hands to help out the innocent people that her stepfather wanted to kill. Unfortunately, when she got older, she became sort of wimpy and wanted Haydn to solve her problems instead of trying to help Haydn defeat her stepfather. Also, what made me so frustrated about Bethan's character was when she realized what Haydn really is, she just decided to not trust him just because he revealed his true form to her. I mean, I also believe that there should be trust in a relationship, but there is also the fact that spouses should accept each other for who they are no matter what and Bethan does not seem to understand that fact about Haydn. Overall, “Bride of the Beast” is a great story, but I would give the story a five star rating, while the heroine of the story gets a three star rating.

Kiss of the Vampire by Eve Silver – 3 stars

Sarah Lowell started working at King's College Hospital after her father died and strange things strated happening at the hospital when someone is killing the weakest patients by draining their blood and surgeon Killian Thayne is the prime suspect! However, Sarah will soon discover that Killian Thayne is no ordinary man!

Out of all the stories I have read from this book, this was the weakest story I have read and there is not much to say about what I liked about this story other than the fact that I liked the mystery aspect of the story as it includes the typical “Who did it?” murder scenario and Eve Silver did a great job at bringing out the drama in this story. Also, there is plenty of hot sexual scenes between Killian and Sarah that will have your love senses flare up with excitement!

The reason why this story was not a five star read is because the story was a bit boring to read through as there is rarely any action in the story and the plot sort of dragged on too much. Also, I felt that the characters were not lively enough and they sort of fell flat as they rarely have any personality that would make them stand out in the story. Even though both Sarah and Killian are kindhearted characters, they rarely shown any true personality and therefore, they just came out as being sort of background characters throughout the entire story. I also felt that the ending was extremely weak as even though we find out who was killing all the patients, it did not really deliver that punch that I would expect from a mystery story and it felt like it was just thrown in the story to just give the story a happy ending without really explaining about the clues that lead up to the revelation of the suspect. Overall, “Kiss of the Vampire” was not the best story in this novel and it was just an average story.
